James at Temple Meads Rail Station

I have finished packing my bag, it weighs in at just under 20kgs. I have just updated the route page, so see there for more information regarding our rough itinery. Just a quick message – tomorrow I’ll be getting the 4:47 train to London from Bristol, ready for the Eurostar and paris!

If you’re following this blog, post a comment somewhere so I know who’s out there?

Hi, thanks Kristina! how’s life with you, is Tim looking after you?

  • Tim

Hi James! How are you?! Real bummer about the camera. Was just going to have a look on your Flickr. Keep an eye out on benches as you go for another – and proof of Karma!
Great to see you back on a bike anyway. It sounds like you should look into getting sponsorship from the Belvedere for your next trip. Glad to have got mine out here to Norway in one piece – indispensable as it means I can leave for work 5 minutes before!
Of course Im doing my best not to look after Kristina, but she seems to find my secret sock stashes anyway!
Keep them updates flying in and the best to you and that bloke with the hair.

Cheers tim, good to hear from you. how’s life in sunny norway? we’ve met a couple of couples of danish girls. how’s kristina? are you now expert in all things caffeine? we had a greek coffee this monrning. not great, tasted like it had all sorts of bits in.
    let me know,

    James

Danish girls are better in pairs (So Im told Kristina!)
Coffee is so good Im not using sugar (much!)
We’re pretty busy mostly though, as Norwegians seem to live off black ‘vanlig’ coffee – so brewing em up and sending em out with as much love as poss, but the best are always the ones i make for myself right as i finish my shift! Works probably doing me some good anyway, after being a lounge lizard this semester past. Hairs on my chest or something. (Although ‘House’ recommences in a couple of weeks so I might have to give in my notice!)

A customer yesterday exclaimed (after asking to read the schpiel on some of the different packets of coffee we use):
‘The 3rd september? This coffee is stamped as the 3rd of september? Why are you selling me out of date coffee!’ When i told her that it was actually the date the beans were roasted on she ended up ordering a cafetierre right away!

As far as Greek coffee most of the ones I had were (iced) ‘frappes’. They love those! Nestle must make a killing on instant frappe.
    Anway must stop rambling!
    Over and out.

Sounds cool.. had some coffee in turkey, and again the same grittyess. i believe they brew it in the cup, a very fine grind. not to my liking. house. dan and i have been pining for a film, or some sort of brainless entertainment! i think being a lounge lizard is harder than one might beleive, and hairy chests are overrated i’m sure! we’ve been putting matts cafetierre to use alot, although it’s metal inside, as are out cups so the coffee does have a certain taste to it. signing off now, dan’s had his boots stolen by some naughty border guard last night, finding scarpa gx-6357644’s is going to be tough in sophia!
    hope all’s well,
    james

boots stolen by a border guard or taken as a bribe? guess its a tough road to becoming worldly wise! (anyway you never know, suddenly all the lonely planets might vanish and lighten the load!) try and get some of dans photos stashed somewhere for safe keeping anyway…
havent ventured into inland turkey but hear great things, as of sophia, you lucky so and so’s!

    re: coffee
its the same with an espresso machine – when its clean it gives a metallic taste to the first few made. so you just make them anyway and throw away to ’spice’ the machine with the coffee oils. if your caffetiere is metal maybe the same applies?
a tip for the caffetiere though, once your grounds are in start pouring the water fastish to mix em then slow right down. the grounds will rise through the coffee to the surface and start to form a layer on top. dont stir them back in! just keep pouring really slowly and you will find you can fit in a lot more water than you think!
wait 4 minutes (no stirring!) then once the time is up gently push the grounds on the top from side to side and they will sink below the surface under their own weight, leaving a layer of pale scum which you can skim off with a spoon and chuck before grabbing the press and plunging – voila!

    ehrm..
merlin season 2 has just started!

  • Tim

& the 1st (double) episode of the new series of House is probably the best I’ve ever seen.. Guess you’ll have to wait for a Tokyo internet cafe!
Anyway keeping an eye out for updates from you guys. Take care. T

    re: tv
well how exciting! a new house episode!!
dan has said how equip the internet cafe’s in Japan are so perhaps a mass viewing there! merlin might perhaps be a little harder to find, whilst there is a dedicated audience in Britain perhaps it wont be as big in asia!
sorry about the lack of updates i think dan has been better than me. i am going to buy an ipod touch in china, a new one so any good apps?
    speak soon,
    james
